You know one of my pet hates is seeing Stationary and Stationery used the wrong way. Barely a week ever goes by where I see a Graphic Designer spelling Corporate Stationery the wrong way and calling it Corporate Stationary… yep with an “a”.
It grinds me to my core. But once upon a time I too fell for this wrong-doing.
Back in 1997, I was liberated and today you will be too.. an awesome mentor of mine, Marie Howarth told me a simple way to remember the right way.
She asked me… A train, what does it do when it pulls into the station? I said, “hmmm it stops.” She said “correct, it becomes stationary.”
So “A” train becomes stationary at a big train station. She said “when you’re about a write the word in question (Stationery) always remember the “A” train principle… therfore small business cards and letterheads must be the other way with an “E”. Armed with that I was set for life.
Thanks Marie
